Day 10 ~ Santa Fe, New Mexico

Monday ~ June 27, 2011

We leave Williams, Texas at about 9:30 am on Monday, June 27th. We are headed for Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The men are excited to see the mountains fade away...

Not quite yet tho... they still hang around a bit more!
Pretty cool rock formations!
Amazing shapes and holes!
We make it to New Mexico~
Fence sign says... Chief Yellowhorse. They were selling knives and jewelry!
Just a few pretty shots...
The sky so blue... the sun so warm!

We saw many a sign about Route 66 Souvenirs along the way!
The long and winding road...
Plenty of wind still too!
Dave is the photographer "on the road"! He just aims and shoots~ pretty good, wouldn't you say?
GET MORE KICKS.... ummm
Girls, Casinos, Route 66~ Really?
We are getting close now!

We see a train/tram riding along the highway between traffic lanes!
Fires are burning in two New Mexico cities. On the way, we see that the city of Los Alamos is closed to any in-coming traffic. Sadly, we find out they have lost nearly 50,000 acres to this raging fire. As we travel, we can see the "foggy" smoke filled air from this fire.

We arrive in Santa Fe at 4:30 pm and set up our camp. Fire pits are forbidden here due to the dry conditions. We have our usual cocktail hour and discuss the nights plans. Bacha is looking alot like a pirate in this pic, isn't he?
We have a nice little spot in the shade! Temps are in the 90's!
It is nice to relax a few minutes before finding our way to Old Santa Fe!
We get a cab~ our driver name is Niyel, we call him the "cowboy cab driver."
Check out the beautiful cactus... but be warned~

We get to the plaza and find all kinds of shops. Shops selling everything from jewelry to cowboy boots!
On the Cowboys advice, we find our way to the La Fonda hotel. We are to travel up to the top floor and find the rooftop bar... and ask for Tommy.

The La Fonda is beautiful inside~

On the roof, Dave looks out over the smoke filled sky. The bartender, Tommy, tells us that at night, you can even see the glow of the fire.
Margarita's bring smiles to our faces!
We begin toasting our rode trip here ~ It goes like this. "To our Once in a lifetime trip... and Never again!!!!" We are finding the driving to be ALOT! We are finding that we would like more campfire time together, but we are still enjoying each other's company very much!
Sad sky over Santa Fe.
Back on the plaza~ some pictures of buildings~

Fun stores~

Beautiful church!
We find out that the name Baca (sounds just like Bacha) is BIG here! The name goes back a long way!
Will it help get us a table here?
We have dinner at The Shed. The place was packed. The food was not that great, but the drinks were strong!!

We then head to Evangelo's, A Heros Bar. The owner, Nick, runs the bar. The band was great and we enjoyed listening and watching the entertainment here. Nick named the bar after his dad, Evangelo, a world war II veteran. Many famous people stop in and Nick has many photos hanging everywhere in his bar. A picture of his dad hangs prominently behind the bar. Evangelo is dressed in full army gear and looking every bit an american hero. We had the camera... we have no excuse for missing the opportunity to capture this bars sign or even a picture of Nick.
